A turkey, some friends, and a cozy night by the tree

Tonight was the annual CHRISTMAS DINNER AT THE VICKERS!!!

For those of you who don't know, Christmas dinner is something that has happened every year probably since my Junior year of high school.
It is a gathering at my house within a few days of Christmas where all of my friends gather and bring Christmas foods (in the style of a potluck) to a turkey dinner.
We all get dressed up.
Mom sets the table formally.
We enjoy an extremely hardy meal.
Play holiday charades.
And have a gift exchange.

This year was no different.
Great food, great friends, carols around the piano (no. seriously. we did for like, 20min.), and good times.

This year (as she has been wont to do recently) Mom wrote us some new cards for our game of Christmas Charades, as we've been playing off the same cards for some 6 or 7 odd years.
The best one was when Alex drew 'The Governor of Syria'.
SERIOUSLY?!
'The Governor of Syria'?!?!?!!!!
How do you 'charades' that?!
It was pretty hilarious, but Alex was determined.

After plowing through the new homemade batch we generally pull out the original holiday charades cards and give them a go.
This is always really fun because at this point, we have the cards memorized.
It's just a matter of being the first person to shout it.
Sometimes turns only last a few seconds.
=D

This year in the gift exchange gifts were pretty good, some random, some awesome, some awesomely random.
Mine was the latter.
I got
~A giant stuffed energizer bunny
~A wooden reindeer
~A wooden pirate wall plaque thing
~A wooden teddy bear with moving arms and legs
~A 'Granny excercise sweatin' to the oldies' tape
~And.....my favourite........A carpet patch thing of JFK's head in front of the white house. We think it's a rug. Or a wallhanging. We aren't sure.
ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was amazing.
I do believe that JFK will have to find a home in our apartment, possibly in one of the bathrooms, or on our kitchen floor (I am of the opinion that he is supposed to be a rug of some sort).

Chazse got a bag absolutely filled with girly bath and body works products, which everyone refused to steal from him 'cause it was just too funny watching him be frightened of the plethora of scents.

Let's see.....Hot items were the 'Oregon Trail' computer game, and the Nerf gun.

After the gift exchange we watched 'Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog'.
Only about three out of sixteen of us had seen it before, so it was pretty awesome. Everyone loved it. HAHA! How could they not?
He's Dr. Horrible.
He as a PHD in horribleness.
=D

After Dr. Horrible, some people left, and the rest of us just sort of hung out talking, sleeping, or playing spat.

At the end of the night some of us were standing on the porch (I was seeing people out) and we all agreed that Christmas Dinner is a wonderful thing. It is the one time out of the year that everyone gets to get together at the same time and get to catch up. We all know it's coming, we all plan for it, and it's a constant thing.

It was a good night.
A succesful night.
A night full of love, laughter, and a little bit of Christmas magic (That's right! I said magic!)
And to top it all off-
I walked away with JFK.

Pictures will hopefully follow soon!

The Coalition Lives!!!

Nothing.
And I mean, nothing
can beat an amazing night of Mafia.

Tonight was one of those wonderful mafia nights at Blake's house.
Arrived around 6:30, we hung out and ate pizza until around 8pm.

And then the merciless killing spree began.

We had all the really good mafia people there tonight, so the games were particularly full of lying, scheming, deciet, and betrayal.
All the things that make mafia AWESOME!

Later in the evening (about game 3 or 4) Alex, Tracy, and I, who were sitting on the one couch together decided that we would form a blind coalition.
This meant that in the next game, no matter whether any of us were mafia or civilian, we would NOT vote to kill each other.
We thought it would make the game more interesting.
And you know what?
It did.
*evil grin*

By the third game with coalition it had become like this evil force to rival the mafia. It was the civilian anti-mafia.
Except that if it came down to it, we would start killing civilians rather than turn on coalition members. (which was very interesting when the game came down to Alex killing either Tracy(civilian) or DeeAnn(mafia) and he HAD to kill Tracy because she wasn't in the coalition. Thus winning the game for the mafia. The room was in shock. "I can't believe you just did that!!! I didn't think you would! But you DID!)

The other people in the game started to realize that at a certain point, if they didn't start killing off coalition members, WE would end up with the majority vote and be forced to kill THEM off.

It was just awesome.
Our games are so intense and cool.
Plus we're all a bunch of really good liars most of the time (except for Nomi and that tell-tale blush of hers!)
Which doesn't sound like a necessarily good character trait, but makes for some great freakin' mafia.

To sum up this highly technical and mafia related post:
I had an AWESOME night.
I love my friends.
My friends are really good liars.
And.......

THE COALITION LIVES!!!!!!!
YES!!!!

The night before the dawn before the DAY of Christmas!

Hello everyone!!!
It's Christmas eve!!!
And for me that means.....
CHRISTMAS!
(since nothing really happens for our family on Christmas day)

Christmas Eve service at the church was first.
It's my favourite service in all the live long year.
Mostly because it's just so dark and beautiful and atmospheric and everyone sings all the Christmas songs that we love (Huzzah for my brother singing 'Mary Did you Know?'!)

Tonight all the children in the congregation were particularly rambunctious.
They just couldn't manage to be quiet for two minutes together!
It was quite amusing.
My favourite part was when RuthAnn was singing, 'Breath of Heaven' and after the line that says, "What have I done?" one of the children in the congregation let out one heck of a yelp (which sort of set off whimpers and squeals from all the rest of the kids).
All as if to say, "No. Really. What have you done? I mean, Mary? Did you know?"

Then at the end when Pastor Casey was finishing with the 'Christmas Prayer', all the children got really loud and started almost a sort of call and response with each other; each child listening to the screams of the child across the isle and responding in kind.
And all I could think as I tried to hide my giggles was, 'God bless the little children'. LOL!

Then my family came back to the house for the traditional Christmas eve homemade chicken stew, and chili.
Lots of chaos. The children were quite wound (probably from all that call and response at church) and were running around screaming like banshees.
Mom kept trying to take pictures of people, everyone was snitching cookies, the grandmas couldn't hear, and by the time the soup was ready we were all to full of cookies to eat much, but managed to force ourselves.
All in all, it was the usual ritual. =D

We opened our presents next.
Which was anarchy.
It's hard for it not to be when there are chittluns involved.
They're just so darned excited!
Elsie was adorable, she kept walking around showing people her presents and smiling, "This is my dolly. This is my dora. This is my book. Read my book please?"
Joe and Ayden ran around with screamy laser guns Mom got them.
And little baby Abe kept ending up on the floor underneath wrapping paper.
I swear, it felt like the kid was trying to get crushed!

My big present this year was a GPS system for my car.
And when I opened it, I cried.
A lot.
Because I absolutely did not think I was getting one. And that was ok.
But then I did.
And now I don't have to be lost anymore.
That's what I kept saying to mom through my tears, "I don't have to get lost anymore!!! Thank you Mom!! Dad, I won't be lost anymore!!"
It was pretty pathetic.
But man.
I am so happy I don't have to be lost anymore.
You have no idea how important something like this can be, until you've spent your life being directionally handicapped.
Always having to leave a half and hour earlier than everyone else because you're going to get lost on the way.
Never being able to just leave, because you have to follow another car.
The stress of being lost in scary areas of a city.

I am soooooooooooooooo happy.

In other news, my Grandmas made me my t-shirt quilt!!!!
It's a quilt with all of the t-shirts I had in high school and early college from plays and stuff sewn in.
I don't really wear t-shirts, but I wanted to save these and the Grandmas made them a quilt for me! =D
And now I will have them always.
Which is awesome.

From Phil I got an AWESOME 'Doctor Who' key chain (Sarah, Emily, and Rachel: I'll show you guys after break. It's fantastic)
He also got me a cool graphic novel and a giant history of 'Doctor Who' tome that has like, everything a person could ever want to know about 'Doctor Who' in it. =D

There were several other wonderful Christmas delights, but I love you all too much to make a complete list of my bounty here. You don't want to read that!

So, with that I will say, "good night" to you all, "Happy Birthday" to Jesus, and.......

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad"

Today was a good day.
Mum and I decided the brave the elements and head into D-Port for some last minute stuff.
She had to pick up some things for Grandma and church, and I just wanted to get out of the house.
So we were both happy.

Davenport was RIDICULOUS today!!!
It was impossible to get anywhere, crowds filled every nook and cranny of every building, and cars were bumper to bumper all day long!
Fortunately, I was with Mom.
And we laugh in the face of such things, "Ha Ha Ha!"

That's what I love about Mom.
She doesn't get mad about things like that, and I dont' either.
I just think they're funny!
Sure we sat in the Target parking lot for almost 20minutes waiting to pull onto the road.
So what?!
Isn't that ridiculous? Isn't that something worth laughing at? I think so.
The world is an absurd place.
Learn to laugh at it or spend the rest of your life railing against the unchangeable.

So here is something for you all to learn about me.
I don't get mad when things go wrong.
I generally think it's pretty funny.
The problem is that my reaction tends to just stress everyone out more, "WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING?!?!??!!!!"
Where other people suffer from the, 'this'll be really funny years from now' syndrome, I pretty well find everything funny as it's happening.
The world is a silly, silly, place!!!!
I just wish people would learn to enjoy things as they happen to them.
=D

Anyway.
Tonight a bunch of my friends came over
(sans Chazse, who had emergency surgery! And felt like he had to call me to apologize for not being able to come!!! POOR CHAZSE!!! I feel so horrible for him! Poor guy! It really sucks. And I'm definately praying that he feels better soon, because we missed him tonight).
We played Taboo for like two hours (HUZZAH TABOO!)
Which was, as usual, hilarious!
I love Taboo.
And I love Taboo with people who love Taboo
We laughed a ton and had a really good time.
Alex the 'King of Taboo', came over.
Unfortunately we discovered that his Kingship is entirely dependant upon who is guessing for him.
Thus the king was dethroned.
The record of 14 cards in one round still stands.
=D

Then we all watched 'Hamlet 2' together.
HAHA!
It was an.......interesting movie.
Sort of like, 'The Producers' in spirit.
The best part is at the end of the movie when they put on the show, unfortunately you have to sit through the rest of the movie to see it....
But I personally think it was worth it to see Hamlet saving Ophelia and Gertrude to the strains of 'Somenoe Saved My Life Tonight' as performed by the Tuscon Gay Men's Chorus.
ROFLMBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously.
Rent it just to watch the end.

We all talked for a while after the movie was over, and then everyone left!
So here I am.
Up in my room and ready for bed.

I thank God for my friends.
I love them so much.
They make me so happy every time I'm with them, and I hope I bring them as much joy as they bring me.
(Seriously, I cannot think of a recent time we have been together and NOT had fun)

Thank you God.
Thanks for that.

Bored...

So....
I'm a little bored.
And I've decided it might be fun to make a list of some of my favourite fictional characters (and also some that I just find really interesting) and then assign them each a song that I think fits them best.
Since I tend to think of life in terms of song, this shouldn't take too long!

So, here goes!

*10th Doctor: Doctor Who
'Ordinary Day' by Vanessa Carlton

*Rose Tyler: Doctor Who
'The Call' by Regina Spektor

*9th Doctor: Doctor Who
'Beautiful Disaster' by Kelly Clarkson

*Kermit the Frog: The Muppets!
'Rainbow Connection'....duh.

*Mr. Darcy: Pride and Prejudice
'Out of My League' by Stephen Speaks (the band) or TJ McCloud (the lead singer)
~if you haven't heard this song...You MUST.

*Ella of Frell (from the BOOK 'Ella Enchanted', not that silly, silly movie)
'Your Mistake' by Sister Hazel

*Edward Cullen: the Twilight series
'For Always' by Josh Groban

*Mr. Edward Fairfax Rochester: Jane Eyre
'Collide' by Howie Day

*Thursday Next: The Thursday Next series
'Unwritten' by Natasha Bedingfield

*Ned The Piemaker: Pushing Daisies
'Everybody' by Sister Hazel

*Dumbledore: Harry Potter
'Standing' from 'Once More, With Feeling'

*Captain John Hart: Torchwood season 2
'Come Here Boy' by Imogen Heap

*Geraldine Granger: The Vicar of Dibley
'Big Girl (You are beautiful)' by Mika

*Sir Percy Blakney aka The Scarlet Pimpernel: The Scarlet Pimpernel series
'Ordinary Day' by Great Big Sea

*Dr. Horrible: Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog
'When I am King' by Great Big Sea

*West Kelly

Well....That's about all I'm going to do for now.
Feel free to add to or provide suggestions for the list in the comments.

Cheers mates!

Ice storms, scary trees, and a missing mouse...

So yesterday was Des Moines auditions.
I think they went well.
Pretty well.
As well as these things go anyway....
My throat was pretty dry, so it wasn't quite as vibrant as I would have liked.
But oh well, it's always something with auditions.

Mom and I drove through an ice storm to get there though!
On the way to Des Moines we were completely stopped for almost a half hour before moving along at 3mph for about another 40min.
Argh!!!
Why do people drive so stupidly in ice?!?!?!!!
ESPECIALLY people who live in IOWA?!
You would think they would KNOW BETTER by now!
....Anyway.
Silly people.
Winter weather = drive slowly.
SL-OW-LY.
Ack.

Well, now I'm all snug at home.
Mom and Dad have the creepy dancing tree up on the porch.
He freaks me out every time I walk by and he goes, "MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!" with his evil glowy green eyes....
And then he sings at me.
Mom and Dad laugh, taking joy from the sight of their only daughter being verbally attacked by a creepy dancing tree.

I hooked up the office's old computer in my room today.
FINALLY!!
Now I don't have to drag my massive desktop home from school every break!
Unfortunately.....Dad didn't bring the hookup that goes with the little wireless mouse.
So the computer is all hooked up.
But I can't use the mouse.
*head smack*
I just hope the roads clear up so i can go in to the office tomorrow and look for the missing 'all important' attachment.

Anyway.
It's time for dinner.
So I'm gonna go make pita pizzas and avoid the dancing tree of death.

Happy Christmas!

Something very funny on a very busy day

I've been running around since 8am this morning.

And I just stopped.

ACK!

I hate days like this! That's why I try to be so organized about things, so I can spread them out and not have to rush and run from one thing right to the next.

Anyway.

The busy part is pretty much over now.

And I just saw something very funny.

I'm sitting at my computer with the tv on and I hear a cd commercial type thing and it sounds all classical-ee.
So I'm thinking, 'This must be 'Il Divo' or something'
And as I'm thinking that, I hear the announcer guy in his epic voice go, "The Recording you've all been waiting for........The Priests."

Wartburg Track and Field!?!?!?!?!

And then they start rolling pictures of a bunch of priests! SERIOUSLY!!
And it's all, 'Straight from the Vatican!" and stuff
But the graphics are all fancy and it's very 'Il Divo'-esque and I was just sooooooo confused!!!

It was, in a word, hilarious.

And lucky for you all, I just found the commercial on youtube and can share the joy.
=D

'Bless Bliss' we used to say

I just spent the day watching 'The Thorn Birds'.
All 10 hrs of it.
With Emily.
In my PJs.

And I'm just a really happy person right now.

Nobody ever wants to watch miniseries with me except Mom.
Today someone did.

And that's cool.

=D

Sing it with me! 'And so what we have learned applies to our lives today-'

What did we learn today I may hear you ask?

What did we learn today?

We learned that I should never watch 'Doomsday' unless I am mentally prepared for a mini-meltdown.

That's what we learned.

A lot of movies and tv shows make me cry.
Let's face it.
I'm a weeper.
I cried at 'Snoopy Come Home'
I cry during Hallmark commercials
Heck, I once cried during a Backstreet Boys music video (don't judge, you weren't there)

99.9% of the time, it's just that initial time that gets the tears going.
Maybe a few times after that if the incidents aren't too far apart.
But generally, the shock wears off and that particular thing does not make me cry anymore, 'cause I know what's comin'.

It's been 2yrs since I watched 'Doomsday'.
I watched it again tonight.
And cried nearly as much as I did the first time.

Alrighty then.
Lesson learned.
Rule?
Meet exception.
lol.
I'm such a wuss.
*shrug*

Now if I could just learn to cry on cue it might actually be useful!

Here's my favourite Rose/Doctor youtube vid.
It's edited really well.
I love it when they cut the clips in rhythm. =D

ACK!

Why ITS?

Why are you out to make my life diffcult?!

Internet is out in Knights Village.
Since yesterday.
Morning.
Freakin'- just-.....ACK!

Yes. I can go to the library and use the internet there.
But I can't check my e-mail as much.
Which is pretty rotten considering that I need to be on the ball as far as getting all my grad school stuff done by Monday.
That's right.
Monday.
I need to be able to reply lickity-split to any e-mails I recieve from professors about recommendations and I can't.

Because the internet is out.

*Head smack*

I'm ok.
Really.
I'm just a little stressed about getting all this stuff done without the conveniance of my computer.

And I feel really bad about having to push my professors for recommendations, but I need them.

For my future.

By Monday!

And here's the other thing.
Minnesota applications are due by December 15th.
What does that mean exactly?
Everything has to be to them by December 15th?
Or do things have to be postmarked by December 15th?

The other thing is, I need stamps.
I have stamps.
But they have superheros on them.
And I can't exactly use them on Grad School stuff.
*head smack again*

I'm sure this will all be fine and I'm just worrying about nothing.
But it's easy to worry about nothing when you know you aren't doing everything you can do (ie. checking my e-mail every hour or so).

rrbrbrbrbrrbrbbrbrbrbrbrbbrbrbbrruh

Yeah.

Anyway.
That's about it for now.
I've spent three hours in the library and that's all the time I have to give for now.

ITS better frickin' well have the internet on by this evening.

Snow!!!

It's SNOWING!!!!!!!!

Also happy is that fact that this coming week (aside from containing a lot of homework) contains mucho Christmas JOY!!!!

There will be Christmas movie watching tonight (HUZZAH!)

Friday night there will be suitemate Christmas Party

Saturday night Leah's coming over for girly Christmas happiness.

And I'm sure there will be random acts of Christmas during the week since there is no choir this coming week (Woot!), and no rehearsals or anything in the evenings!

=D

Yesterday was the Des Moines CWW, and it was way fun.
We slept on the bus, ate out at The Brewery, and watched Chronicles of Narnia on the bus on the way home.
Everybody was all tired and happy so we kept shouting, "long live Aslan!" and clapping when good things happened. =D
I love happy movie magic.

On the downside, I kind of needed to go to Wal Mart today but my car is sort of buried in snow and I really don't want to dig it out.

Wal Mart will just have to wait until nature un-buries my car.
Nature buried it.
It's nature's responsibility to get it out.

Long Live Aslan!!!

Saturday, December 6, 2008

Happy times

I love the Naz and Des Moines CWWs.

I love getting on a bus and riding for hours with everybody.

I love the inconveniances and all the stuff that goes wrong and the driving through snow.

Inconveniances are stories.

They are shared experiences and they bring people closer together.

=D

Today is the Des Moines show and it's snowing (as it always seems to do when we drive to Des Moines). Then we will drive forever and sit around forever and go to dinner practically all at the same resteraunt and deal with long lines and nearly be late getting back. Then we will drive back from Des Moines (leaving late of course) and arrive on campus somewhere around midnight or 1am.

There's a lovely sort of familiarity to it all.

Huzzah for familiarity!!!
Huzzah for Christmas!!!
Huzzah for Snow!!!

Thursday, December 4, 2008

Almost!

I need to go back to Wal Mart for some more lights and garland.

And THEN my room will be sufficiently Christmas-afied.

HUZZAH!

I can't wait to plug in those twinkle lights and sit in my room surrounded by happy blue and white Christmas joy.

=D

In other news....I have a German quiz tomorrow.
I'll get on that.
....sometime.

Wednesday, December 3, 2008

You keep moving on

There is snow on the ground.

A Christmas tree in my room.

And my parents are coming tomorrow.

I'm happy.

But I'll be happier when I'm home on break.

For some reason, college just seems to amplify all the things that are stressful about life.

And when I'm at home, I can ignore it.
I can pretend it doesn't exist.
I can watch Christmas movies with mom,
play scrabble with Jakey,
play mafia at Blakes',
and talk about books and movies with my brother.

And I don't have to think about the future (ack grad schools!), my grades, my vocal chords (stupid cold!), my weight (I just frickin' wanna eat a cookie ok?), or my relationships (in the romantic sense, a profound lack thereof).

I can just drink hot cocoa and enjoy Christmas.

In a little while,
just a little while....
